How to Fill a Hydraulic Jack?

07 May 2025

Step 1: Gather Necessary Tools

Before starting, gather all necessary tools:

Hydraulic jack oil

Funnel

Flathead screwdriver

Clean cloth or paper towels

Work gloves (optional)

Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace

Choose a clean, flat surface to work on. Spread newspapers, a drop cloth, or cardboard beneath the jack to catch any spills. This ensures cleanliness and prevents stains.

Step 3: Locate the Fill Plug

Identify the fill plug on your hydraulic jack. It's typically located on the top or side of the cylinder and looks like a small rubber or metal plug.

Step 4: Remove the Fill Plug

Carefully remove the fill plug using a flathead screwdriver or by hand if possible. Do this gently to avoid damaging the plug or threads.

Step 5: Fill the Jack with Hydraulic Fluid

Insert a funnel into the fill hole. Pour high-quality hydraulic jack oil slowly into the reservoir. Fill gradually and periodically check the fluid level, stopping just below the fill hole to prevent overfilling.

Step 6: Eliminate Air Bubbles

Slowly pump the jack handle several times to purge any air bubbles trapped in the hydraulic system. Repeat this step until the jack moves smoothly without hesitation or jerky movements.

Step 7: Top Up Fluid If Necessary

Check the fluid level again after removing air bubbles, adding a small amount more if required, ensuring the fluid level remains just below the fill plug.

Step 8: Replace and Secure the Fill Plug

Carefully and securely replace the fill plug back into the hole, ensuring it is snug but not overly tightened to prevent stripping or damaging the threads.

Step 9: Clean Up

Wipe down your hydraulic jack thoroughly with a clean cloth or paper towels to remove any spilled oil. Dispose of any waste materials responsibly.

Maintenance Tips:

Regularly inspect your hydraulic jack for any leaks or damage.

Replace hydraulic fluid annually or whenever the jack shows reduced performance.

Always store your jack upright to prevent leakage.

Regularly following these steps ensures your hydraulic jack remains reliable, safe, and ready for all your lifting needs.
